The plan to give Huntsville teens their own place to rock-out to heavy-metal
The plan to give Huntsville teens their own place to rock-out to heavy-metal

James says that every teenager needs a mosh pit.

The drummer for the heavy metal band Wretched Angel is hoping to get more exposure for the band.

There is no dedicated all-ages venue for music fans under the age of 21. The National Guard Armory and Carriage Inn have a cool history of punk and metal, with local heroes like Skeletal Earth and Fugazi. TrashBone was a venue that hosted bands in the past.

The all-ages show is being put on by his father. The Lowe Mill is located at 2211 Seminole Drive. The headliners are Wretched Angels, which features singer/ guitarist Anthony Andaluz and others. Alabama bands Iron Law and Tellurian Complex are on the bill. There is a cover.

Los Angeles punk band X performed in Lowe Mill’s First-Floor Connector Room in the middle of the year. Wretched Angel’s Saturday show will be the start of a monthly show.

We have no idea who is going to show up. There could be as many as 500. He thinks attendance will be between 100 and 200.

The musicians in Wretched Angel are under the age of 18. Young bands need to be able to play for their own age audience.

There are a lot of punk and alternative kids who need something like this and don’t know where to get it. Teenagers in the area are turning to drugs or violence because they are bored. Everyone has to have a place where they can have fun, without doing anything dumb, because school is hard and people get bullied.

Wretched Angel has traveled for shows in Birmingham because of the lack of all-ages venues inHuntsville. The Punk Rock Art Show is held at The Firehouse.

The band is grateful for the opportunities they have been given. The band plays for older bikers. It doesn’t make sense to do all-ages shows that bring teenagers to bars. Most bar or restaurant owners make their money off beverage and/or food sales and hosting cash- strapped students doesn’t make sense.

There was a lot of music in the house. His dad is an engineer who plays in local bands. Keating played music from the Dead to his unborn son when he was pregnant.

At the age of 5, James began playing the drums. He fell under the spell of metal after learning a lot of beats. Slayer’s Dave Lombardo is one of his favorites. James’ nickname is Animal, a nod to a certain drumming Muppet as well as Phil Taylor.

Keating used to go to Armory all-ages shows when he was a kid. Keating saw people his own age play live and wanted to pick up a guitar. That is one of the reasons why he wants to get all-ages shows happening more often. Keating wants other children to have that experience as well.

It isn’t cheap to rent the Lowe Mill for Saturday’s show. It’s around $685. James and Keating don’t want to make a rainmaker. The cover needs to be kept low.

The Wretched Angel guys promoted the gig the old-fashioned way. They put up flyers at a lot of places. If this first show does well, and they can put on other shows, they might do all-ages shows for other music genres.

James and Keating are working with a person. Lowe Mill hosts an all-ages show in order to introduce a younger crowd to the facility.

Savanapridi has a personal connection to the cause. The all-ages shows she has been to have been some of the best. The audience is in because they are there to see the band. Sometimes you go to a bar and bands are playing and you like them as a side effect.

Mainstream media makes a lot of noise about teens loving rap and ignoring rock. All the lyrics in hip-hop became about talking dirty things about women, drugs and brags about how cool your life is. He was drawn to the metal. The metal comes from a place where people misunderstand it. Giving yourself something to say. The ‘80s hip-hop like N.W.A and Public Enemy come from the same place that metal does.

The song “Master of Puppets” was used in a scene in “Stranger Things” in which a metalhead character plays the song to summon demons. Eddie is a real person. He has been wearing battle-jackets and bullet-belts every day for years.

The band’s story is rigin. Two years ago, Andaluz answered a flyer posted by Johns and they met. Anthony was going to take the flyer down. He said he wouldn’t find a drummer. He saw my flyer when he went to do that. The two men connected with Bardin at an arts event.

The band name Covid was not a great one. Everyone thought that was stupid. The band changed their name after Spearman came into the fold. A banner with the spooky Wretched Angel logo now hangs behind the band onstage when they perform.

Wretched Angel has original songs like “Cesspool” and cover songs like “Angel of Death” The band summons the fury fans expect.

James says cutting a demo is in the works. We are going to tour more in the next few years. We don’t want to be famous. We want to be able to support ourselves with music.

In the last couple years, there has been a noticeable improvement in music here. It has mostly been top-down, with the addition of a full-time music-officer and the addition of two top-notch amphitheaters.

There have been many exciting local initiatives. New live-music concepts include Sluice Fest, Porch Fest and Women In Music Weekend. Adding an all-ages scene would be important.

Local music is the main thing that is being promoted right now. There has been punk and metal in the area since 1980. Wretched Angel got a gig because Donnie Sharp, the singer from The Knockabouts and The Go-Go Killers, helped him.

There is a recent Rolling Stone feature on Huntsville music. The city hasn’t produced a breakthrough artist or band. It won’t be a seasoned act from here that will make it, but a kid. A child who plays all-ages shows.

There is more on music.

Popular musicians played at a number of old venues.

Wes Scantlin is talking about Puddle of Mudd hits.

Daru Jones is a drummer for Jack White.

There is a singer- guitarist-songwriter triple-threat.

Ann Wilson is a musician and talks about her band, Heart.

A guitar hero talks about his band.

Goodie Mob helped shape the sound of southern black music.
