The Fashion World Can’t Get Enough of This Kilt

There is a person who has worn it. Madonna wears it. It has made the street style set into a frenzy because it has been worn by director Janiczabravo and modelella emhoff. Chopova Lowena has an enormous kilt that is attached to a leather belt.

The brand is based in London and will stage its first runway show on the second day of London Fashion Week. Emma Chopova spoke in a breathless few moments between show planning earlier this week of the skirt’s virality. I don’t know what to think.

Laura Lowena isn’t sure how it happened.

Chopova suggests that it resembles a kilt or a skirt that is just kind of different. It is a lot of what we enjoy doing. We like things that look good, but we’re mixing them up.

A lot of people see different things in the skirts. The uniform-ness, a school girliness, or a kilt.

Chopova said it was also full. It feels like a lot of fabric.

The mix of strange and luxurious is what makes the brand so appealing to a wide range of women. There is a sense of joy in the clothes. Steff Yotka is a writer and editor who has been a cheerleader for the brand since it was launched. The women were setting up the show. Every garment is designed by Emma and Laura from a place of warmth and soul. It is a costume for the woman I would like to be.

Women want to make a statement with their clothing, but a lot of it is hard to wear or looks cheap. Chopova Lowena’s dresses and skirts are the kind of thing you might forget you have on until you see someone else. The quality of the construction is excellent. The brand’s dresses, which appear tent-like on the hanger, reveal a subtle, 1940s-inspired columnal couture shape when slipped on, and the carabiners on a skirt I bought last year are kept neatly in place along the top of the taffeta.

What Chopova Lowena proposes instead is that keepsake clothes can be sources of riotous pleasure.

Chopova Lowena didn’t set out to make a high end item. It was difficult to find someone to make the clothes because of their complexity. In the beginning, that was difficult. We got lucky because we weren’t obsessed with the quality. When making their last collection, they decided to find a factory that could make the skirts, which retail between $800 and $1500, with more polish. Things should be made well. We want the skirts to be around for a long time. We’ve improved them.

They want their pieces to have as much manic sophistication as the rest of the item. Lowena says that they don’t want to make clothes that are just thrown away.

It is an exciting and radical idea. Fast fashion has a choke hold on women’s pocketbooks and minds. We’ve become too focused on luxury as a dull, subdued, and minimalist thing. Chopova Lowena proposes that the kind of clothes women like to wear now in vintage stores can be sources of fun. It is the expressionistic statement pieces that historically become collectible.

A runway debut is a signal that a brand has larger ambitions than a lookbook might allow, and while their clothes already encourage movement, the designers tell me they are exaggerating and elevating more of their details. From an industry point of view, it’s notable that the designers have a different approach to happiness and design. It suggests that emerging designers can build a sustainable business without the help of a larger fashion house. Today’s show may bring a new group of women.
