
Students from Merrifield college and a prep school are going to Jeffrey’s Bay in October to compete in the SA Surfing Championships.
The team has been hard at work, training three times a week with surfing drills and physical workouts on the beach to maintain their fitness and build mental endurance for an intense period of surfing at the Championships.
The talent, experience and commitment of the team has shown throughout the season, and Emslie believes the Border side stands a good chance of winning.
Emslie wants to leave Jeffreys Bay once again because he was a part of the side that won in 2019.
Daniel wants to achieve similar success in the sporting code as his uncle did.
He said that he wants to finish in the top six men in Africa for the WSL Africa rankings and qualify for the Challenger Series next year.
I will compete in eight international events with surfers from all over the globe.
If I finish in the top 12 men on this tour, I will qualify for the world tour and become a professional surfer.
Kyan Lugg finished in second place at the Border trials in order to qualify for the championships.
He is concerned that he may not be able to catch the waves he needs if he has a bad heat.
Lugg said he was training four times a week and was hoping to win the SA U16 Championships later in the year.
Malachi is a member of the U/14 team and is the youngest student representing Border.
Wolmarans started surfing at the age of 7 and says: “I continued because it was fun and you forget everything when you’re in the water.”
Wolmarans hopes to make it to the Challenger series later this year in order to avoid being knocked out early.

Brandon Benjamin of Cape Town Surfriders defeated Greg Emslie of East London to become the 52nd South African Men’s Champion at Nahoon Reef on Sunday. Benjamin and Emslie were members of Buffalo City Surfriders.

The Mercedes-Benz SA Surfing Championships came to an end on Sunday afternoon when Cape Town Surfrider Brandon Benjamin and eThekweni Surfrider Olivia Brand became SA men’s and women’s champions. Brandon Benjamin won the Mercedes-Benz SA Surfing Championship on Sunday at the age of 20.

Merrifield College student Daniel Emslie made waves after competing in the Vissla International Surfing Association World Junior Surfing Championships. The 15-year-old competed in the Under 16 boys division against athletes from all over the world, and came fifth.
