After going to court over the use of the band’s music in a TV show, he has been at odds with his former band mates. The band used a majority rules clause to overrule their opponent. The singer said the case left him penniless. In the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death, it seems as though the majority rule clause is once again rubbing Lydon the wrong way.
During the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration, “God Save the Queen” became popular as a protest against the monarchy. The track was performed by the band on a boat trip. After disembarking from the Queen Elizabeth they were arrested and several members of their party were also taken into custody. The song came back to the top of the U.K. charts.
As the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration was about to begin, John Lydon offered further insight on his views towards Queen Elizabeth II during a chat on U.K.’s Talk TV program Piers Morgan Uncensored.
When Morgan brought up the Sex Pistols’ song “God Save the Queen” as an example of anti-royalist sentiment, the singer said it was not anti-human.
I need to let the world know this. I don’t think I’m against the royal family as a person. While raising his hand to his brow, he said he was proud of the queen for surviving. That’s a great achievement, I applaud her for that. I don’t think I’m a bad person about that.
He defended his stance within the song, stating, “I just think that if I’m paying my taxes to support this system I should have a say in how it’s spent.”
“I think it’s the end of the monarchy because Prince Charles isn’t going to be able to handle it,” he said. The man is playing Pink Floyd.
