There was an unprecedented watch for a British lying in state on Saturday evening, as eight of Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughters stood in vigilance around her coffin.

The Prince of Wales and his brother Prince Harry, who wore military uniforms for the event, walked down the stairs with their cousins.

James, the son of Prince Edward, is just 14 years old. His sister also participated.

Thousands of mourners paid their last respects to the queen as her coffin lay in state for three days. Four of her children stood together. The coffin will be on display in London for the funeral of the queen. The queue to see it has had to be closed at times because so many people want to see it.

The queen’s oldest granddaughter and her brother were among the others. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie stood around the coffin with their father.

As the public filed past, the Prince of Wales stood at one end of the coffin while his brother stood at the other. The Grandchildren bowed their heads for 15 minutes.
