No matter what the political scandal was, Queen Elizabeth II still embodied a sense of continuity. She was the only constant in a world that isn’t standing still.

She reigned for more than 70 years, and was the only monarch most people have ever known. How will our collective sense of self be affected by her passing and the change in our Prime Minister just a few days later? At a time of great global uncertainty and economic turmoil, what will happen when the spectacle of the centuries old protocol and procedure end?

In the UK, the idea of stability seems far off.

The Queen’s sense of duty was astounding and she was deeply committed to public service. She was too frail to travel to the traditional location of Buckingham Palace for her role in overseeing the change of Prime Minister, so she continued to do so until her last days.

She signed her Platinum Jubilee letter withElizabeth. Someone who is committed to her work and public service will be missed. She was known as The Queen for a lot of people around the world.

Her devotion was amazing. King Charles will use her deep belief in her duty to serve as a model for his reign.

It’s not just royalty who are there to help. The public sector supports and improves the lives of those who need it. In times of crisis, this is true. The public services did a great job looking after the sick and keeping us safe during the Pandemic. We saw the very best of public servants.

The public services need to prepare for challenges ahead as the world enters another crisis. They will be put under a lot of strain as costs increase.

The months and possibly years ahead will be hard. The monarch and the Prime Minister are both there to serve. Many will suffer as a result of the biggest squeeze on living standards in a generation due to the challenge posed by the new PM.

With our beacon of stability in a sea of change no longer there to guide us, we will be chartering a new course through uncertain times. It might be our individual senses of duty that will get us through. Our duty is to care and be compassionate.

Duty calls as they say.
