The streets were busy, the conversations were loud, and the drinks were flowing at the annual Essence Fashion House in New York. An experience of panel sessions and workshops, up-and-coming designer presentations, digital “shoppable” marketplaces, and a digital runway, the event brought a unique New York Fashion Week experience to fashion lovers from across the city.

The day was split into two panels. The time slots gave attendees the chance to hear from celebrities, tastemakers and other influential people.

On Sunday, September 11th, Target dropped the new futures collection by Kahlana Barfield. She spoke about the art of street style, owning your own style story and her new line.

Kahlana told HelloBeautiful that she always knew she wanted to design a collection, but it had to be with a partner. That is the girl. It is where we spend our coins, we shop there.

The person continued. They wanted me to be happy with what we did, so they gave me a lot of freedom. It wasn’t just putting my name on a tag I was in charge of every step of the process. It was me in all of it, from photography to marketing to fabrics.

The attendees couldn’t stop talking about Russell and Justine. As part of a partnership with Lagos Fashion Week, Justine interviewed emerging designers and Russell spoke to the CEO of ESSENCE about his personal style and influences.

My mom is my mom. Russell smiled when he was asked who his major fashion influencer is. She showed me how to shop and dress. How to buy certain things, not super high-end, but how to put them together. She inspired me to do that and still motivates me today.

The key panelists and attendees heard and saw were TikTok, Sandrine Charles, and Telsha Anderson.

The Walker Fashion Experience powered by The Place was a virtual presentation that complemented the in-person experience. The focus of the platform is to create more financial opportunities for Black people in the fashion industry.

The Best in Black Fashion Awards Dinner was hosted by ESSENCE after the event. Christopher John Rogers was honored as the designer of the year at the dinner, as well as a number of other favorites.

There are street-style looks from the ESSENCE Fashion House attendees.
