Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger Names the Band He Never Wants to Follow Onstage

The one and only Chad from Nickelback recently joined Loudwire Nights host to talk about the band’s new album Get Rollin’, the trouble Chad got into as a kid, what it felt like to play a concert on 9/11 and more.

The new song was inspired by Chad meeting the California prison’s warden at Guy Fieri’s birthday party, but he actually spent some of his own childhood in jail. He was sent to juvenile hall for stealing from his school.

I used to come up with really dumb ideas to get into trouble. In the eighth grade, my mother divorced her husband. What kind of action can my mother take? I was taller in the eighth grade than I am today. She is going to do something. Do you mean to hit me with a spoon? My dad will beat my ass if I go and do what you suggest. The fear of their fathers kept me out of trouble.

The 21st anniversary of Silver Side Up was also the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The opening band for the tour was Nickelback, and they were given the duty to address the crowd.

We had to go up first because it was so strange. The first person to speak into the microphone was me. I said thank you to everyone who came tonight. In one of the most difficult times in American history, please just let us be a distraction so you don’t have to think about what’s happening. Everyone just kind of gasped. That only lasts for a while. You need to get back to reality after the show is over.

The singer says, “It wasn’t until halfway through the day when someone said, ‘Oh shit, our record came out today.'” We didn’t pay attention. We were wondering if anyone cared about our record.

One band he doesn’t want to follow on stage is how good they are. The band was on an early tour bill with Sevendust. Sevendust opened for us after Silver Side Up. You don’t want to go on after Sevendust because they will kick your ass and wipe you all over. It is goosebump-worthy that they are a force to be reckon with.

You can listen to the entire interview with Chad on Loudwire Nights. Get Rollin’ will be available in November. Click here to pre-order
