Glossy Pop Newsletter: Why do influencers go to New York Fashion Week?
Glossy Pop Newsletter: Why do influencers go to New York Fashion Week?

I went to New York Fashion Week when I was a teenager. It wasn’t something that existed. They were in their early stages. New York Fashion Week was mostly held at a few locations back then. The crowd was smaller, the traffic was absent, and the whole affair felt more exclusive.

In the intervening 16 years, NYFW has changed a lot. The fashion crowd has become confused by a younger generation of TikTokers, whose outfits are more outrageous than the generation before them.

Unless I can interview the designers or key stakeholders of a brand, a party requiring hours of time spent on various forms of transportation or waiting in line, all to be packed in a crowded room, is not a good idea.

I know that my job is very different from that of aninfluencer. No one is following me to watch a runway show or to get my take on it. With fashion week becoming a scene with a capital “S”, I wanted to know what motivates today’s content creators to eat less and sleep less.

I asked the people if they were spending money or making money. Does the brand deals this week compare to other weeks? Are your followers interested in your content? Are you having a good time?

They shed light on the version of NYFW that exists in the year 2022.

She told me thattics are everything to her and that she has over 107,000 followers on TikTok. She thinks of three reasons for this. You want to make cool content for your followers, and you want to look good doing it. You need to be in the cool spots to do that. You want to be invited to all the hottest things, and you want to be able to produce content that could potentially make you money at those things.

You want to show potential brand partners that you are well connected by going to those things. If you go to the hottest party but don’t work with that brand, your competitor may see you there, and that can be lucrative for you, even if you don’t want to work with that brand.

She said that being aninfluencer is similar to being a freelancer in that you don’t have a boss keeping track of your goals. In order to measure her accomplishments, she has to check in with herself and ask if she is doing a good job. Is it possible that I am doing a good job? Is it possible that I am making money. There are a lot of events that I didn’t know people were being paid to attend.

The shows, parties and events one attends can tell a lot about their status. She said that the front rows of shows like PatBo and Cynthia Rowley are usually filled by people from the internet.

The week presents lucrative earning opportunities for people who attend the shows and live in NYC. A quick look at her social media pages throughout the week shows that she had a partnership with NYFW: The Shows and Afterpay, but she couldn’t confirm it.

NYFW is a good place to make money, but it is not the best time to make great content for your followers. My views were dramatically down this week. The fashion week content on TikTok was too much. She said that lines and guest lists were more inflated than in the past.

She shared that her engagement also went down during the event. There are 141,000 followers on TikTok, and 48,000 on IG. She feels obligated to do it because it is similar to the fashion Olympics. A lot of the events are not worthwhile. You spend a lot of time picking out clothes, you spend a lot of time on the subway, and then you get to an event for 30 minutes. It is a brief hello and then you get a drink or something. If you go to a single event, it can feel like you have gone to all of them.

She still went to every runway show she was invited to despite taking a more cutthroat approach to selecting events. I said yes to all of them because they are so enjoyable. Those are the things that make fashion week exciting. She said that she didn’t work on paid partnerships specific to fashion week because she had her schedule in order. She borrowed clothes from Shopbop as part of a no strings attached deal.

She said she keeps going to fashion week events because of the social interaction. She said that she isn’t trying to change anything when it comes to the content she creates. I place a lot of importance on trying to have as much fun as possible and trying to be as creative as possible with my outfits. I would like to see my friends and network with them. This is like a businessweek for me.

The week is full of important networking opportunities, as well as being a chance for David Evan to have a bit more fun with his personal style. There are 107,000 followers on the social media platform. He had to go back to school after attending the first half of the show. The reason for that was to have face time with the brands I work with. NYFW gives him the chance to play with fashion in a way he doesn’t always have the chance to do in college. It is a good time to be yourself. He wore a skirt for the first time. I don’t think I’d do that on my college campus.

Allegra Shaw has 363,000 followers on social media, and 122,000 on TikTok. She lives in Toronto, so unlike some of the other people, it comes with a cost. She came to New York City to attend the Revolve Gallery as part of her partnership with the retailer. Shaw wears clothes from brands that host the shows she attends. They included Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Tibi and Michael Kors. Shaw said that you don’t have to post when you are dressed by a brand, but you do if you want to maintain a good relationship. My followers like to see the runways, so I will always post a show in my account.

Shaw was asked if she would continue to attend the event. I think about that a lot. It has changed quite a bit. I think I will come but at a slower pace. I am not a Gen-Z TikToker, but I feel like a lot of the events are, which is what is happening right now. Shaw said that she is not sure where she fits in at fashion week.

As time goes on, she becomes more of a pro.

I wanted to know if it was still about seeing and being seen.

She said to film yourself and take more pictures so they could see you later.
