Four ways to lower your cholesterol
Four ways to lower your cholesterol

One of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease is high cholesterol, which is why September is National Cholesterol Education Month.

Your body uses cholesterol as a building block to make vitamins and hormones. Too much cholesterol can cause a problem. There are two main sources of cholesterol. Saturated and trans fat-laden foods can cause the body to create more cholesterol.

One of the main causes of cardiovascular disease is high cholesterol. It’s important to keep your numbers in check.

Dr. Prange said to know your numbers and what they meant. If there is an issue, lifestyle changes can bring the numbers back in line, but if not, medication can be prescribed.

The American Heart Association recommends four ways to lower cholesterol.

  • The best way to lower your cholesterol is reduce your intake of saturated fat and trans fat.
  • A heart-healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts and non-tropical vegetable oils, while limiting red and processed meats, sodium and sugar-sweetened foods and beverages.
  • Physical activity is important. At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week is enough to lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure.
  • By quitting, smokers can lower their bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase their good cholesterol (HDL) levels.
  • Being overweight or obese tends to raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol. But a weight loss of as little as 5% to 10% can help improve cholesterol numbers.
