It could have been the thought of a far-off spring, or the return to normal after a long time. Whatever inspired so many designers at New York Fashion Week, they came up with a lot of cheerful and adventurous looks.
The shows came up with a lot of new ideas for the Spring.
There was a festival of bright yellow and purple that was electric and soft. There are lots of side cutouts and wings. You can’t wait to wear this stuff.
Proenza Schouler is coming up on its 20th anniversary and ruffled was a big thing. The designer duo sent out flamenco-inspired ruffled, bell sleeves and lace shirts. All black, white, and blue were the colors of the collection.
Prabal Gurung came out swinging with an eccentric collection showcasing lots of off-the-shoulder action, more big and bright colors, dresses swathed in sheer materials and asymmetrical takes. There are hot pink ones.
Tibi brought in elements of celebration. All of the dresses and pants are fun and flowy, and were put together by Amy Smilovic. She had a one-sleeved blazer that you could wear to an office but not without making a statement.
There are more ruffles coming from Badgley Mishka. The collection was inspired by Marrakech and Casablanca and was designed by Mark Badgley and James Mischka. They showed ruffled evening gowns, a streamlined blazers for day, and saffron dresses for just about any occasion.
Veronica Beard’s collection was as stylish and professional as ever, but with some added flair. Designers Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard did a good job with their tailored suits and jackets, but threw in lots of prints and unexpected colors. Bronze and robin’s egg blue, anyone?
The most talked about show of the week was the Marni show, which was staged underneath a subway bridge in Brooklyn. Instead of showing in Milan, the Italian designer spread his wings for NYC and went in for big displays of color and texture: technicolor short skirts, unisex shorts and tanks, maxi skirts and long trenches, many of which were big and busy. It was fun and bright, like many of the best pieces shown this season.
