Fashion for Durga Puja: a constant tug of between the traditional and western outfits
Fashion for Durga Puja: a constant tug of between the traditional and western outfits

The depiction of the common folk of Bengal is complete with a white saree for the women and a red saree for the men. The above appearance is what makes us think of a Bengali. The people from the state are always depicted in this way.

The dressing style of Bengal is changing with the times. The traditional dressing style is being taken over by the western influence. People used to wear dhuti-panjabi a lot. This attire is not seen these days. Women used to wear sarees and girls used to wear dresses. The traditional dresses have become a threat to the environment.

Due to the rush, people have gone for jeans, t-shirts, shirts, pants regardless of their genders. The fashion is changing in order to fit the time. The traditional clothes are only for the celebrations and special occasions. Durga Puja is the first festival that comes to the mind of Bengalis.

Bengalis plan to wear a variety of outfits during the festival. Buying clothes that will be needed throughout the year is not the only thing being done. There is no saree and panjabi on Ashtami. It might be a person from any age group, for Ashtami, every female buys a saree and every male buys a t-shirt. Modern fashion can’t cloud this tradition.

Even though people might change with time, their roots are not. Every person is in a search of a scope when he/she can return to his/her tradition despite the fact that the modern world has changed every person’s lifestyle. That opportunity is provided by Durga puja. The comic relief in the tragedy of life is called it.
