The first month of school is a busy time for many students at the college. The Baker Ferguson Fitness Center is filled with students from a variety of fitness levels sharing the same equipment. The center’s resources are free of charge seven days a week if you have a consistent six-day-a- week gym routine.
Financial and transportation barriers limited the use of the high school gym for many students before they arrived on campus. There are opportunities for a more pleasant workout for sophomore Charlie Thompson.
Thompson said that he likes the new and well-maintained gym at Whitman. The different equipment available to me has allowed me to do different things in my workouts.
The restrictions on gym use during Jozie’s freshman year made her appreciate the current facility and equipment.
They changed from having four squat rack to the entire gym with multiple layers set up. There will never be a time when you want to use one but can’t.
Many people think athletes are the primary users of the gym, but many students use it for personal health, strength and growth. The start of a new semester is a good time to start a new routine.

My motivation doesn’t always stay the same. Rumley-Wells said that she had to balance her work and gym time as the semester went on. The more assignments you get the less energy you have. I try to stay consistent despite the occasional motivation coming and going.
When going to the gym on their own, they feel outnumbered by athletic teams that use the facilities. A first-year student works out in a group.
Keller has been going with friends. I think it’s great. Sharing music tastes and workout routines is what we get to do.
The bright lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows help make the space feel open and secure, according to Rumley-Wells. Keller thinks that the gym is a judgement-free space.
The benefits of working out include improving health, creating a source of community and reducing stress. Students are ready to start their year with the gym as a central part of their personal care regimen as new routines are created and solidified.
