Elon Musk believes self-driving cars are the future, but most Americans are wary, new survey shows

Most Americans are wary of the idea that self-driving cars will make regular cars obsolete.

Three out of four Americans don’t feel safe in a car with self-driving features, according to a survey. More than 70% of survey respondents felt less safe knowing other people are on the road in cars with features like autopilot.

About 1,500 US residents over the age of 18 responded to the survey performed by Policygenius.

” Whether because of road rage, reckless driving, or car accidents, it’s understandable that many people are wary of taking their eyes off the road and relying on a self-driving car.” auto companies and insurance companies will need to resolve a number of challenges, from helping people feel safe on the road to navigating new insurance implications, like who is at fault in an autonomously driving vehicle incident

Major automakers are investing in self- driving. Last year, Ford said it would spend $7 billion on self-driving technology, while GM said it would spend $2 billion on Cruise.

The hallmarks of the electric-car brand have been made by Musk. The public will be able to buy a fully self-driving car from the company, though the timelines have changed over time. The $15,000 add-on or $199 per month subscription is the only way to get the feature.

The survey respondents said they wouldn’t pay more for a self-driving car.

It’s not the first survey that shows hesitance from US buyers when it comes to self- driving technology. According to a report published earlier this year, 85% of people don’t feel comfortable using the tech to transport their loved ones.

Over the past few years, self-drive technology has captured the attention of the public. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in June that it had launched investigations into dozens of crashes that occurred while the autopilot feature was in use. Videos of bugs in the services have been posted on social media by the drivers and passengers of the car company.
