Edmonds Kind of Play: Fashion Plate fun, a Kraken corn maze plus nights out for parents and kids
Edmonds Kind of Play: Fashion Plate fun, a Kraken corn maze plus nights out for parents and kids

Thanks to a generous gift from a neighbor, the adults in our house put the calendar aside and did an Edmonds Kind of Saturday last weekend. We went to the Bird Fest and saw a talk about the Union Bay Natural Area. We stopped at the ARTspot to say hello to the owner, who we know from the preschool circuit. We walked out of the store after seeing the best thing in the window display: Fashion Plates.

Fashion Plates and Day to Night Barbie were some of the best toys of my childhood. Vintage Fashion Plates let you take rectangular plastic plates with raised shapes of models in different attire and mix and match segments of the body with different clothing. A real dream come true for me when you would take a sideways crayon across the top to capture the outline and then add color to your designs. The new version of ARTspot appears to have the same setup as the old one.

I like the idea that you can get Fashion Plates for the artist, young or old, in your life, but I think the main reason I share the info is to discuss Fashion Plates and the reaction I get when I look at a crayon. I want to think about anything besides figuring out how to cram in all of the weeknight events that come with the beginning of a school year. Before we get to the library help that showed up in my inbox, let’s talk about two local options for Parents/ Kids Night Outs.

Custom Home Builder Edmonds, Home Remodeling Edmonds

I saw a flyer for a Parents Night Out at the bird fest. I called today to find out more about the Gymnastics Parents Night Out, which is for kids ages 5 to 10. Three hours of games, crafts, obstacles, fort building, gymnastics and more will be enjoyed by students. They will most likely be tired at night since there will be free time. Water and snacks should be brought by kids. You can register at rec zone.org

High Trek Everett

High Trek is offering a Kids’ Night Out on Fridays from 5 to 9 pm for kids ages 10 to 15. High Trek staff will help it all go smoothly for $65. The four hours includes a snack and is divided into four main activities: a ropes course, ziplines, laser tag, and a camp activity. There is a $65 fee per child and more information can be found at High Trek Everett.

Before we get to the very helpful, but school-related, library info, we need to know one more thing. Stocker farms has a corn maze. One of my crew members is a huge fan of the Seattle Kraken. It must be pretty exciting because I received a post about this maze via social media, which is how we communicate half the time. Stocker farms will be open for two weekends in October. You can find more information at StockerFarms.com.

I received an email from Sno-Isle Libraries that said you are not alone. There are back to school resources. It was followed up with a reassurance. Sno-Isle libraries is here to help students and parents. The library is responsible for a lot of sighs of relief and this was one of them. Patrons can get access to online tutoring, research databases, test prep materials, helpful videos, free printing, and more with a library card. There are How-To videos for students to learn how to find a tutor, get ready for a big test, or get homework help. You can call your local library or visit Sno-Isle.org to find out more.

The person is by Jen Marx.

Jen Marx, a mother of two boys, is always looking for a fun place to take them that makes them tired enough to sleep.
