Dave Mustaine Texted James Hetfield About His Onstage Insecurity

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine said he sent James Hetfield a text after he admitted to being nervous during his performance.

Hetfield got emotional before playing “Sad But True” at a concert. He told his fears to the audience.

The leader of the band said he wasn’t feeling well before he showed up. “Like I’m an old guy, I can’t play anymore, because I’m a little bit insecure, and all this bullshit that I tell myself in my head.”

Mustaine said he tried to reach Hetfield via text. The Megadeth figurehead said that he loved those guys in the band. I sent a text message to James a couple of days ago after he admitted that he was not comfortable playing guitar.

Mustaine said, “James, I really like your playing.” He didn’t respond. No, definitely not. Why wouldn’t he do it? I wanted him to know that.

Mustaine, a former member of the band, compared his early musical leadership to that of the band’s primary duo. Kirk Hammett replaced Mustaine in the band.

In a chat with Classic Rock, Mustaine was asked if the founding members of the band, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, are alpha males. Mustaine didn’t agree with the remark.

He said that he is the alpha male between the three of them. I didn’t understand why I had to do everything in the band. They asked me to talk to the promoter and collect the money. I don’t understand why I had to do the fighting.

Megadeth released their 16th album, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!, this month.

The Global Citizen Festival is happening in New York this month. Get Megadeth tickets.
