Top story

Downstate Republican Darren Bailey’s tax returns show years of feast — and famine — on the farm

The tax returns show that Bailey had major financial ups and downs on his downstate farm over the past five years.

Bailey earned more than $200,000 in adjusted gross income in the top year of his career. Bailey and his wife have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal farm subsidies over the course of the last year.

Five years of tax returns were released by the campaign. The farmer who won the GOP primary told the Sun-Times that he wouldn’t be releasing any of his returns. The man was asked if he was a millionaire.

Bailey said he had farm ground. That is a good statement.

Since that time, Bailey has styled himself as a candidate of the working class, taking every chance to criticize the incumbent governor as out of touch with the financial problems of the populace.

The first two pages of Bailey’s tax returns were made public yesterday. The Bailey’s reported adjusted gross income of $1,776.

They had an adjusted gross income of $211,108 in 2018, which was an increase of $211,108 from the previous year. State representatives in Illinois made over 67,000 dollars last year. The Baileys earned $132,416 in taxes.

The Bailey’s reported adjusted gross income of $189,029. A total of $111,599 was taxed.

The Baileys had a negative income on their tax returns. When Bailey moved to the Illinois Senate, he and his wife reported a deficit of $164k. The Baileys had an adjusted gross income deficit of almost $100,000 in 2011.

Joe DeBose, a spokesman for the campaign, said that all of the property owned by the candidate is tied up in the land. There is a huge difference between a man who built a family farm with his bare hands and a billionaire.

Bailey has acknowledged farming more than 12,000 acres of farmland in the state, but his campaign wouldn’t say how much the Baileys own. Some of the Bailey farms have partnerships with other people.

Tina Sfondeles and WBEZ’s Dave McKinney discuss what the returns reveal.

Your daily question☕

What is a classic Chicago staple?

We will feature your answer in the next afternoon edition if you send us an email.

We wanted to know if someone was looking toimmerse themselves in the culture of Chicago, and what neighborhood should they move to.

Some of you said something.

Roger’s Park. The neighborhood is one of the most diverse in the country. There are many languages spoken there. It feels like we all try to help each other.

The park is called Hyde Park.

George Bugasch said, “Dunning/Edison park/ Portage Park.”

Mela Mamaos said, “Pilsen.”

Since he wants to criticize Chicago, why not live in some of the toughest neighborhoods, like Englewood, and see if he likes it? As governor of Illinois, what will he do to stop the violence in Chicago? You are a critic of the city because you haven’t lived there.
