Black Adam is a DC anti-hero film starring the wrestler-turned-moviemaker, D.J. The final trailer was released last week, giving fans a glimpse at the villain, Sabbac. Members of the Justice Society of America showcased their different powers to viewers.
During a sneak peek event at Warner Bros Studios, some of the cast members talked about their characters. The actor who plays Hawkman talks about how he trained in martial arts since he was a kid, his inspiration including Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Iko Uwais, and how he wanted to elevate his fighting style.
The film has a lot of super-powered beings, but there are also those with no powers who want to fight, including Adrianna Tomaz, played by Sarah Shahi, and her brother, Mohammed Amer. The fighters are trying to help their country.
Amer describes his character as sweet who doesn’t want to get involved with anything but will fight if someone is hurt. His relationship with Black Adam? He is definitely scared of him.
Amer said he was afraid of Black Adam. You feel very connected to him, even though he is scary. For our characters, Sarah and I, you feel safe for sure. We don’t know what we’re seeing. What are you seeing here? We don’t know if there is a purity that we are trying to get to, but do we want to get zapped before that? A lot of risk for that. There is a lot of unknown and I think the balance is just understanding that there is something powerful happening and we want to get to it but still scared to encounter too much.
Adrianna is very excited that Black Adam is there. Mo said that he met him with a lot of apprehension at the same time. She kind of becomes the Black Adam wrangler.
The Justice Society of America is a DC hero team that is in contact with Black Adam. With Black Adam dishing out his own form of justice, it will raise questions as to how the team should handle things.
When she is introduced to Black Adam over the course of the film, there is a question that comes up. Is it good or bad to have black and white? Is the gray area you can function in indicative of how we see justice? Swindell said it was true. Is there any other way that we can get justice for the group that has faced hardship? That’s the kind of shifts that happened for the storm.

Black Adam will be clashing with Hawkman due to his version of justice.
Hawks sense of justice is his own. The leader of the Justice Society has to walk by a code as he leads other people through the same path as he did. Black Adam does what he wants, based on what he believes in, and doesn’t care as long as he gets his job done the way he wants. There is an understanding of justice but there is a different perspective on how to get that justice.
It takes a long time to become a superhero in a DC film, and for the role of Hawkman, it takes a long time.
It is an endurance run, a marathon, and you have to really prepare your body for every day when you are shooting for a long time. I’m wearing a costume. We are doing stunts in it, it is like 35-40 pounds. It is 100 degrees in the rig and the wires flying and you have to stay limber, stretch, and workout.
When he got the job as Hawkman, he began to train. He was trained by the stunt team when he arrived. His schedule begins at 4 or 5 a.m. at the gym, where he works out for a couple hours. He is running stunt training at 8 a.m.
He picked up a few different martial arts styles when he was a kid. Since the man has been through so much as a warrior, he wanted the fighting style to grow. He worked with his stunt double, David Charles Warren, to come up with the fighting style for the movie.
I was okay with that. Give me instructions. I know what I’m talking about. I don’t know what to say. Let’s really make something. He explained it. We created a style for Hawkman to take from here. We would be able to elevate and make something that you haven’t seen in film if we were blessed to do more. I was a fan of action movies when I was a kid. Iko Uwais, Donnie Yen, and Jet Li are my guys. They are my guys! They do a good job. You want to put down a mark that inspired you as a child.
We had a lot of fun with the idea of not making the powers dominant for Carter Hall because he is still a Hawkman. The powers are what they say they are. They are an extension of the beast that he is, so we’re flipping it to where he is in the room. When you have the power, you will see a completely different arsenal. He is a one- man army. I love that we can change the scope of how we see it.
