Study Finds Twice Weekly Yoga Substantially Reduces Age-Related Mental Decline

You may think of yoga as a way to stretch and move around. As scientists uncover new ways the ancient exercise benefits us beyond the physical self, they know that it is much more than that. According to a recent study, yoga can help keep our brain health up as we age.

Brain Plasticity was published by researchers from the University of Illinois and Wayne State University in Michigan. Structural changes in the brains of participants were tracked through 11 different studies. Those who practiced yoga at least twice a week had a positive correlation to the function of their hippocampus, amygdala, prefrontal cortex, cingulate cortex, and other brain networks.

The researchers were impressed by the results of those who practiced Hatha yoga. One of the key mechanisms could be that yoga practice impacts emotional regulation. The three core elements of yoga seem to affect the brain structure and function.

More studies are needed to confirm the findings, but early indicators of a link between physical and mental benefits are cause for hope. Most of us can strengthen our brains by doing yoga only once or twice a week for 10 to 24 weeks, according to Gothe.

That doesn’t sound very difficult. Stress relief and blood sugar management are just a few of the benefits you might be getting. Before taking up new exercise protocols, make sure you talk to your doctor. After your given the green light, it’s Namaste all the way.
