Why Peloton’s Robin Arzón Believes ‘Balance’ Is Actually a Myth

Robin Arzn is the head instructor and vice president of fitness at Peloton. She is the mother to a one-year-old girl. She has done everything from writing New York Times best-selling books to collaborating with companies to design chic sunglasses and jogging strollers.

You might think that Arzn juggles all these disparate passions and responsibilities by practicing that vague concept of “balance”. Balance is not in Arzn’s vocabulary.

Arzn thinks that our current understanding of balance means that we will give each area of our lives the same percentage of focus, attention, and effort. There are going to be weeks or seasons where that isn’t possible.

Arzn says that priority becomes important.

A healthier approach to what makes it into your calendar is to prioritize a short list that is in alignment with our values and our current purpose. This makes sense. Identifying what needs to happen when is what being a multi-hyphenate means.

Here are Arzn’s top tips for honing in on your purpose

1. Become aware of your flow states.

Are you aware of those times when you feel completely immersed in an activity and then completely focused on the task at hand? It is important to be aware of when the flow state occurs. It would be great if you could focus on the things that deserve more of your attention.

Arzn says to notice moments in your day when you lose track of time, but also when you’re focused on a product, paper, spreadsheet, phone call, or creative endeavor.

When you consider your hobby, rather than your job, you might get into these flow states. Arzn thinks that hobbies can turn into roars with the right environment and intentions.

2. Create your own “power posse.”

If you want to develop and hone your passions, and even work with a life coach, rzn is a great advocate.

She likes the idea of forming a power posse of people who you respect. They may be people in different industries who can give you some pointers. Having accountability partners in the workout space is effective, but we can also do it in business and relationships.

3. Give all sides of your identity room to grow.

Arzn is also an athlete, business person, wife, daughter, sister, and many other things. She encourages others to pick and choose which parts of their persona they want to shine brighter at certain times of the year.
