Pink Floyd had a good year. In April, the band released a new song called ” Hey Hey Rise Up” in support of the people of Ukraine, marking the first new original music recorded together since 1994. Pink Floyd will release a new version of Animals on Friday after years of delay due to a liner notes dispute.
Nick Mason doesn’t think there will be any more Pink Floyd music. He doesn’t think Pink Floyd should make another album.
Mason has kept busy in recent years with his new group Saucerful of Secrets, which performs early Pink Floyd material and features Gary Kemp, a long time Pink Floyd touring bassist. Mason would like to use Pink Floyd’s fame to change things.
It would be great if it could become a force for good. I know that sounds trite, but it’s similar to Live 8, a series of benefit concerts that raised money for poor countries. It was the first time in 24 years that Mason, David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright performed together in public. Their last would be this one, as Wright died in 2008.
Mason says that Live 8 was terrific, but that it might be hard to duplicate now that we’re short of Nelson Mandela figures. If someone were to organize the event, he would be happy to participate.
Mason would love to be a part of something if there was someone who could assemble the bands. I would prefer it not to be fighting Russia. To use music for good or social change in the right way is what I would prefer.
