Turns Out, All You Need for Fashion Week Is a Plain White Tee
Turns Out, All You Need for Fashion Week Is a Plain White Tee

Every 6 months, the fashion set watches and waits to see what comes down the runway at New York Fashion Week. Street style trends are just as important as the designers’ visions. As for the rest of the year? The item of the moment was a plain white shirt.

White t-shirts topped off many of our favorite street styles. It’s simple, it’s fresh, and it’s refreshing. If critics called street stylers front-row peacocks, what would they say about this group of fashion showgoers?

During the most recent fashion week, Vogue’s Lisa Aiken wore a lot of white shirts and tanks, but she also wore a pair of black Ray Bans. Naomi Elizée wore a tank top with a Prada skirt and Paloma Elsesser wore a red and yellow Nike Air Bakin sneakers.

The white shirt is derived from men’s undergarments and thanks to mid-century male muses like James Dean and Marlon Brando the cotton tee and ribbed tank moved over into mainstream fashion. The perfect U or V-necked shirt was worn by the minimalists of the era. Today’s iteration doesn’t stray far from the classics but it does have a distinctly 2022-feel.
