Mimisounds

It is good for guitar magazines to talk about the future of guitar, but it is the young players like Mimsounds that make that happen. She proves that rock is dead if you want it to be by reaching hundreds of thousands of fans.

She branched out to longer-form covers and vlogs about all things guitar thanks to her covers of classic solo songs. Since starting out two years ago, she has collaborated with guitar royalty such as Tim Pierce and the team at Andertons, as well as built up a following of over 200,000 fans on social media.

Who first inspired you to pick up the guitar?

There is a person named Jimi Hendrix. I fell in love with his sound and guitar after watching a video of him playing. I got my first electric. Jimi Hendrix is the reason I fell in love with the guitar.

What made you want to share your playing online?

I did a live stream to practice on my tricyle. A lot of people asked me to post a video of my playing and so I did. I didn’t know what to expect when the videos blew up, but I had a lot of people like me playing. I was surprised, but I was happy to know that people loved what I was doing.

What’s the first thing you play when you pick up a guitar?

I play the most recent idea I have been working on when I pick up a guitar. When I pick up a guitar, I like to play a lick from Stevie Ray.

Who would be your dream musical collaborator?

Someday, I would like to work with John Mayer. I have admiration for his abilities as a musician. It is a dream of mine to work with him one day.

Which piece of guitar gear could you not live without?

I have a fulminator. It is a Mexican standard and it has a lot of sentimental value to me. When I was in school, I played my first gig with that guitar. I like to change my gear frequently, so I don’t attach my sound to it. It’s about getting the best sound out of what you have.

What kind of guitar would your dream signature guitar be? Do any brands come to mind that you’d love to work with?

My dream signature guitar would take the basics of the PRS studio and add some elements of a Stratocaster. The studio guitar is great, but the Stratocaster is my favorite guitar. I want to combine my favourite things about both of these guitars someday.

If you could go back in time to one legendary concert, which would it be?

It is difficult. It’s possible Stevie Ray Vaughan lived at El Mocambo. It must have been one of the best experiences you could have as a guitarist.

What solo are you working on right now?

Dann Huff sings Stay. He had a band called Giant. I need to perfect my technique for the hard licks in there. I wish you good luck, I will try it again soon.

What advice would you give to a guitarist who wanted to build a following online?

Don’t be afraid to share your personality with others. The person behind the guitar is important to the people.
