Blackpink are the world’s biggest K-pop girl group. Jisoo, Rosé, Lisa, and Jennie have become a global pop sensation without any hint of changing what they do. Blackpink’s new album, Born Pink, is short and sweet and bristling with brassy uptempo confidence, just like their previous album, The Album. They are rock stars even when they are lovesick. They have always had a good pop album in them.
Blackpink remind you that you are nowhere near as cool as they are, but at least you are able to enjoy their charisma. Born Pink is about being a girl who gets what she wants. “I’ll be all you need until I’m driving you insane” is a perfect Black pink motto.
After a period of growth, they came back with Born Pink. It is more fun than The album. “Pink Venom” blew up this summer, their splashiest hit yet, they switch between English and Korean, and they show their stuff with the gusto of a vintage Eighties glam-metal band.
These women floss in their car over a trap beat and a crazy loop of classical violin, and they call it “Shut Down” Niccolo Paganini wrote the song “La Campanella.” They kiss off rivals and the photographer with a smirk. There have been many attempts. The girls chant, “Whip it whip it whip it, keep watch me shut it down!”
Blackpink boast about being both pop stars and rock stars in “Shut Down,” so it makes sense that their best songs on Born Pink are the ferocious rock & Roll anthem. The peak of the album is called “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and it is a guitar-driven song with a lot of over-the-top synthesizer-disco. The opening line of “Tally” is “I say ‘fuck it’ when I feel it” Black pink do not care if you don’t feel it. They sing, “While you’re talking all that shit, I’ll be getting mine.”
“The Happiest Girl in the World” is the only song on Born Pink that isn’t good. When they insist on having fun, Blackpink are at their best. Born Pink is the greatest pop album they have ever made.
