9 Best Songs of the Week: Weyes Blood, Suede, The Orielles, Death Cab for Cutie, and More

Plus Algiers, Cate Le Bon, Gilla Band, and a Wrap-up of the Week’s Other Notable New Tracks

By Mark and Joey.

The 35th Songs of the Week will be published this week. We had a very clear top. There are two album tracks on the list. We decided on a top 9.

In the last week or so, we’ve posted interviews with two music artists.

We reviewed a lot of albums.

We released our first album, Covers of Covers, at the beginning of March on CD and digitally. It can be streamed here. You can purchase it from American Laundromat or on Amazon.

The double print issue of our 20th anniversary issue is available now.

In order to help you sort through the plethora of fresh songs released in the last week, we have picked the nine best the last week had to offer, as well as highlighting other notable new tracks shared in the last seven days. The full list can be found below.

This is the first thing. “It’s not just me, it’s everybody.”

On Monday, Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Mering) announced a new album, and shared its first single, “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody.” There are some tour dates that are being called the “In Holy Flux Tour.” November 18 is the release date for Hearts Aglow. The album’s tracklist and cover art can be viewed here.

Weyes Blood had her first album for Sub Pop, Hearts Aglow, which was #2 on our top 100 albums of the year. Mering and Rodaidh McDonald produced the album closer “A Given Thing.” Kenny Gilmore mixed the album at 101 studio. In the darkness, there are guest appearances from Meg, Daniel, and Mary Lattimore.

The album is her follow-up to the acclaimed TitanicRising, the first album of three in a special trilogy, according to a press description. In the same way that Titanic was an observation of doom to come, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow is about being in the thick of it, a search for an escape hatch to liberate us from ideological chaos.

Mering says that they are in a shit show. My heart is a glowing stick that illuminates my chest in an explosion of earnestness.

There is a typed and signed statement here.

Weyes Blood has an all time favorite album.

Weyes Blood was interviewed on the cover of our 20th anniversary issue.

You can read our review of the album here.

Front Row Seat to Earth was Weyes Blood’s previous album and made it to the top of our list.

You can read our interview with Weyes Blood on Front Row Seat to Earth.

Weyes Blood spoke to us about endings and death.

There are two I don’t know what to do without you.

The album, called Autofiction, was released today. There are two of its singles that made our Songs of the Week lists, but there are also some album tracks that we love, including the six-minute long epic “What Am I Without You?” The album closer “Turn off Your Brain and Yell” made our honorable mentions list. You can read our rave review of the album here.

Two British bands who came to prominence in the 1990s are going on a tour together. Their last performance in America was in 2011. The Manic StreetPreachers were last here in 2015.

“I can’t think of a band I’d rather share a stage with than the Manic StreetPreachers.” Thousands of Suede fans feel the same, and they have always been an inspiration to us. We haven’t played together in nearly 30 years, but I think these shows are going to be special.

The song “She Still Leads Me On” was the #1 song of the week. One of our Songs of the Week was the second single, “15 Again.” The album’s third single, “That Boy on the Stage,” as well as an 18-minute short film connected to the album, was shared by the band.

The originators and survivors of Britpop have to use the name The London Suede in America. Ed Buller has produced many of the band’s albums. The Blue Hour was the follow up to the album.

The album was made in a studio in the Kings Cross area of London.

Anderson said in a previous release that their punk record is called autofiction. Whistles and bells are not allowed. The band were exposed in all their mess in a room with all the glitch and fuck-ups revealed.

Anderson said that autofiction is where we want to be.

It was a physical rush when we were writing the record. You’re hanging on for dear life.

The lyrics to Autofiction were inspired by Anderson’s two autobiographies, Coal Black Mornings and Afternoons with the Blinds Drawn.

The band broke up in 2003 after the release of their fifth album. Bloodsports, their first new album in over a decade, was very well received by critics and was their first new album in over a decade. The next two were 2016’s Night Thoughts and The Blue Hour. Not counting 1997’s two-disc B-sides collection, this is the ninth album by the band.

We reviewed The Blue Hour.

On The Blue Hour, we talked to Suede.

Bloodsports.com has an interview with Suede’sBrett Anderson.

We looked at the 25th anniversary of Dog Man Star and wrote a retrospective here.

There are three. The room is called The Orielles.

The Orielles released a video for their new song, “The Room.” The album will be out on October 7 viaHeavenly.

The first track on the new album was not part of the album sessions, according to Sidonie Hand-Halford. The Autumn/Winter of 2020 was when it was recorded. We had been there for a day and a half. We had spent the past five or six months in lock down, not really able to spend a lot of time with each other, so we were all bursting with ideas. The way we write is very reactionary with each other and we missed that. It was amazing to put us together in this room. The majority of the record was written within an hour or two. We were in this room at Eve and we wrote a lot of ideas. We picked up the lyrics at random because they were written randomly. I think she got that from a Clarice Lispector novel. The whispering was influenced by bands like Portishead.

The video for “The Room” is a visual representation of how the song was written. The video has limitations and instruments that are more unfamiliar to us. The lyrics and vocal delivery lent themselves well to a video, so we broke the song down into its parts and created interpretations of the words. The simplicity of this video is inspired by a lot of the early works of Agnes Varda and Peter Tscherkassky.

It was produced by the band with the help of a friend. The band’s single “BEAM/S” was one of our Songs of the Week.

We had an interview with The Orielles on their new album. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are four. Death Cab for Cutie is a band.

Death Cab For Cutie’s new album, AsphaltMeadows, was released today. You can read our review here. All of its singles made our Songs of the Week list, but there were some album tracks that we loved. We narrowed it down to a song and an album. Both the main list and honorable mention are made by the former.

The band played the album’s title track on Jimmy Kimmel Live! They performed album tracks “Roman Candles,” “Foxglove Through the Clearcut,” and “A Movie script ending” online. You can stream the new album and see the performances, along with a visualizer for the title track, here.

The band stated in a press release that the day was finally here. The new album is out and we are very happy. We were able to make it. We found our way through a very dark time and have arrived with a record that is a reflection of everything we have accomplished. We hope you love it as much as we do, because it’s yours now. We can’t wait to see you in person. Thank you for listening.

Several tracks from the new album were performed on a recent livestream performance. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are five. The song is called “Bite Back” and it was written by Billy woods and Backxwash.

Algiers shared a video for their new song. Backxwash and billy woods are featured on the single.

“Shit’s been so real the past few years, we really needed to grow our community of collaborators and make solid the bonds we’ve always felt.” billy woods and Backxwash are on the same track. I want you to pinch me.

Franklin James Fisher said, “Ryan showed up one day with this beautifully epic instrumental and said, ‘I want to call itBite Back.'” It reminded me of why I joined the band in the first place. This is a classic example of our dynamic.

There is No Year was released in early 2020 by Matador.

On The Underside of Power, we had an interview with Algeria. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are six. Cate Le Bon had a song called “Typical Love”.

Cate Le Bon shared a video for her new song. The video was directed by Phil Collins and is an homage to Henri-Georges Clouzot.

Le Bon states that the product of a rare jam session was “Typical Love.” The outline was written on bass and taken into the Pompeii sessions where I disassembled and reassembled it many times but it always felt like a second cousin to the other tracks.

Cate has always conjured up the European silver screen. If Pompeii sounded like Antonioni at his most sincere and poetic, then ‘Typical Love’ would be similar. The delicate tension between performer and character is acutely felt in the unguarded moments at which 16mm is used.

Pompeii was released in February via Mexican Summer. “Running Away,” which was #1 on our Songs of the Week list, “Moderation,” which was #1 on our Songs of the Week list, and “Remembering Me,” which was #1 on our Songs of the Week list, were included.

Our interview with Le Bon can be found here. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are seven. The band is called Post Ryan.

The Gilla Band shared a video for their new song. Most Normal will be released on October 7 via Rough Trade. Adding new London dates is one of the additions the band have made. The complete list of the band’s upcoming tour dates can be found here.

Ryan’s friends asked the band to make a track for his 30th birthday, and they did. We wrote and recorded a hair metal song to honor Ryan. The bones of what is now known as Post Ryan were found right after that. This may have taken the longest time out of the tracks. The track’s words were silly when they were first written. There was a line of people waiting to get into the Christmas socks store. It’s stupid. It didn’t match the tone. I came up with a melody after messing with the second half of the electro rolaotomy. I was told to get out of my comfort zone and write a letter. We had a different approach to our last album. It was very nude. I left the room when I showed them the demo.

Most Normal was recorded and mixed by Daniel Fox. They shared the single “Eight Fivers” when they announced the album. The album track is called Backwash.

The Talkies was released in 2019. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are eight. “Anything that feels good is bad.”

On Wednesday,Whitmer Thomas shared a video for his new song, “everything that feels good is bad.” His upcoming album, The Older I Get The Funnier I Was, will be released on October 21.

Thomas states in the press release that the song is about all of the things he doesn’t want to do. I don’t have a lick of self control. I am fortunate not to have a drug problem, but I think it is a symptom of me being a goofy dumbass around people who I want to think I am cool.

The song “Rigamarole” was one of our Songs of the Week. One of our Songs of the Week was the album track “most likely”. The person is Joey Arnone.

There are nine. Babehoven said, “stand it.”

Babehoven shared a video for their new song. Their debut album, Light Moving Time, will be released on October 28.

Maya Bon stated in a press release that she feels the deeper fractured: home, bonds, semblances of family care that slip away from her. It is about trying to push through the challenges to be there for one another and to call out for support.

Babehoven shared the lead single, “I’m On Your Team.” Double Double Whammy was the place where they shared Sunk. The person is Joey Arnone.

There were honorable mentions.

The songs were close to making the top 9.

There is a song called “Ovule” by Bjrk.

Bill is a fan of the show, “Coyotes.”

I will never give up on you.

There are eggshells.

The greatest weapon is hand habits.
