There are so many artists and so little time. Each week we review a bunch of new albums, round up more new music that we’d call “indie,” and discuss what metal is coming out. All day, we post music news. Some of our favorites are included in a weekly update. A bunch of new songs in one place is what this is about.
“XTASY” is a song written by RAVYN lenae. It is called DOECHII.
The new version of “Xtasy” features a new verse from Doechii, and is a remake of the Kaytranada-produced song.

“Do it or don’t.”
“This song is about navigating difficult choices and keeping your head held high,” Julia Kugel says of her hazy, languid, Lynchian new single as Julia, Julia. I had to confront the idea that maybe there is no plan, no destiny because I am obsessed with finding meaning in the meaningless. All you get is the choice. There is a reason to do it or not to. It doesn’t feel right, but you make the choice and move forward. You will find your footing eventually, and perhaps even make up a meaning. The drums were the first thing I started with. I wanted a steady pace and a walking rhythm. The strumming guitar has a simple thumping grooves. I wanted everything to look the same. The bass line gives a little more movement with subtle slides, like gentle sighs. The choruses are comforting even though they are emotional and rhythmic. The way it ends is a bit confusing and unresolved, but I like it. She is releasing her solo debut later this month on Suicide Squeeze Records.

“SLEEPING CAR PORTERS” was written by Andrew Broder and features Moor Mother and Billy Woods.
Andrew Broder, who used to record as Fur, says “Moor Mother and Billy Woods are two of my favorite writers.” I wanted to make a Lynch-esque song. Something similar to Gravediggaz hanging with burial. The song and album themes of waking dreams and predetermined reality fit their styles. I think Alan Moore would like this. The soundtrack to Alan Moore’s The Show will be out October 7.

“It’s like a secret”, says the husky.
Skullcrusher’s new album Quiet the Room is due out next month, and the new single “It’s Like a Secret” is plaintive. Skullcrusher says that the song was written when he first felt connected to the album as a whole. I had been trying to put into words a very familiar sensation that was completely inexpressible. I associate it with being very immersed in a creative project and also disconnected from other people. As a shield, a home, a place to hide and feel safe, and an outlet for my creativity are some of the ways in which this feeling feels. The song was about the process and limitations of trying to communicate this feeling. It feels wonderful to be able to convey these thoughts.

“LandSLIDE” is a phrase used by BREANNABARA.
“Landslide is about trusting your intuition and how you can fall off of listening to it at times,” says Breanna Barbara of the new single from her upcoming album Nothin’ But Time. When you are in tune with your intuition, it can feel like you are at the top of a mountain, but when you fall off, it can feel like you’re lost. I believe that the song refers to your fate and what it means for you.

“HOURS” is a word used for Faulkner.
Fauncess is releasing her debut full-length, The Golden Ass, next month via Cascine, and the second single is “Hours,” which she says “is one of the few songs I’ve made where the lyrics were written after the music.” I felt like I was at war with time because of the pounding nature of the beat, and I wish there were more hours, minutes, seconds in the day. I would like to be able to manipulate time, expand and contract it according to what I need. More time to do things you enjoy is bound up with time. The first thing to be sacrificed is the pleasure, as the capitalist order makes cruel demands on our time. Time is just as valuable as money, but sadly time doesn’t pay the bills.

“CONTROL” is what Crocs and Napoleons are called.
The duo from West Philadelphia released their first new music in five years, “control”, after signing with Grand Jury Music. Madel Rafter says that he wrote “control” in 2017. “I wanted to capture the feeling of walking through an art museum and holding all of your muscles tightly, because if you don’t, you might give into some crazy impulse and do something really really bad, like pull a painting off the wall and put your foot through it.” The lyrics talk about wearing a mask for the world to hide internal negative thoughts and worry about being bad to the bone. The song feels funny on the surface, but I use humor as a way to make up for the feelings of darker sentiment. We took an approach that feels almost sing-songy at the top, but gets more chaotic, fast, and emotional as the song progresses.

“Repetitive” is the title of THUS LOVE.
You can get an early listen to Thus Love’s debut album, Memorial, on October 7 via Captured Tracks. The band says repetition is a look at how habits are formed. We’re not always proud of our habits but sometimes there’s beauty in stepping back and acknowledging that these patterns make us who we are.

It’s bad to feel good, says Whitney Thomas.
“Anything That Feels Good is Bad” is about “all of the unhealthy things I know I’m not supposed to do that I get some satisfaction out of doing in the moment”, says Whitmer Thomas. He says that he doesn’t have self control whether it be socially, emotionally, or physically. I am lucky not to have a drug problem, but I think it is because I am a goofy dumbass around people who I want to think I am cool. Hardly Art released The Older I Get The Funnier I Was.

“FLAGS” are the words used for fudge palms.
Michael le Riche, also known as Fake Palms, releases his new album Lemons this week via Hand Drawn Dracula and here is one final preview. “‘Flags’ is a song about finding where you fit within the machinery,” says Michael. Is it comfortable?” Is it against what you believe? Do you want to do it, or do you have to do it? Do you feel disloyal? How much do you actually enjoy it? These things we rally for or against seem to be what we answer to. It’s kind of about what happens when you have to stare at your decisions.
