10 movies to get you in the mood for Fashion Week
10 movies to get you in the mood for Fashion Week

My editor claims that it doesn’t mean you can’t get into the mood. There are some movies that will get you ready for Fashion Week.

There are some obvious choices when it comes to looking at fashion in movies, such as The Devil Wears Prada, which is a cultural reset, and the movie Ocean’s Eight, which is set in the Met Gala. Including all of the obvious ones would be revolutionary, but let’s show you some choices that are worth a watch, even if you don’t know anything about fashion.

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)

Three drag queens from New York are going on a road trip with some famous people. We don’t know what will happen if that description doesn’t catch your attention. It is fun, camp, and so ahead of its time. The movie has become a staple in gay history because of it’s extravagant and memorable fashion.

The Dressmaker (2015)

The Dressmaker isn’t talked about much when it comes to fashion and sewing. The movie is about a couturier who came back to her hometown to take care of her sick mother. She is going to use her sewing machine to get revenge on everyone who hurt her in the past. It’s queen behavior.

Mahogany (1975)

We all love a good rags-to-riches story, and that’s what Mahogany is about. The lead character is played by Diana Ross, who also designed some of the costumes.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

It is a must-watch for fashion lovers because of the amazing cinematography and performances by Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio, but also because of the amazing cinematography. The suits, dresses, and headpieces were designed by Tiffany & Co., Miuccia Prada, and Catherine Martin.

In the Mood for Love (2000)

In the Mood for Love features a peak 1960s Hong Kong fashion. The dress hasn’t lost its elegance since it was popularised during the 1920s, as evidenced by the fact thatMaggie Cheung stole every scene with her bright qipao dresses. The film being bathed in red and gold adds to the charm that makes the film so memorable.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

When it comes to fancy gatherings, Asians do not play. In a room full of crazy rich Asians, the gowns, the bling, and the glamour are all through the roof. Each dress would fit a red carpet, and the performances by the stars make this film a fun watch for a night in.

The Witches (2020)

This new adaptation didn’t get a lot of praise, but the performances by Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer are still very good. The fashion and glamour presented are a nod to many style icons such as Marilyn Monroe, and taken to another level with exaggerated proportions and bright colors. You cannot change our minds.

The Love Witch (2016)

The Love Witch is a dark comedy about a sorceress named Elaine who uses magic to seduce men and then murders them in cold blood. She wears mid-century dresses with ruffles, pendants and striking eyeliner when she does. All of the costumes are one-of-a-kind, and definitely worth a watch, because Anna Biller, the director of the film, created these looks herself.

Clueless (1995)

Many people discount chick flicks and romcoms as just fun, shallow movies for young women, but in reality those films are much more than that. The tartan prints, mix-and-match two pieces, and headwear are so outrageous they look good in Clueless, an adaptation of Jane Austin’s Emma.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Legally Blonde is one of the classic chick flicks with quotable dialogue. The film reminds us that we are not dumbing ourselves down if we care about fashion or look good for ourselves. It is a great message to end any late night watch party with, be yourself, and keep improving.
